Coleman v. Grand Second Circuit Amicus Brief

Cornell Law School Shield Icon

The Clinic filed an amicus brief in the Second Circuit on behalf of journalist Michael Balter. The underlying case is a libel suit arising from statements an aspiring jazz musician made at the height of the #MeToo movement about her complicated relationship with a prominent jazz musician. The case has serious implications for anyone speaking out about alleged sexual assault and harassment, particularly journalists covering these issues. The Clinic’s amicus brief addresses these practical implications and highlights the importance of robust First Amendment protections for journalists covering #MeToo issues. Clinic student Alyssa Ertel assisted with drafting the brief, under the supervision of Stanton Fellow Christina Neitzey.
